The Lonely Grave of Amos Buckman 1821-1898
Buckman Springs, San Diego County
How many times have you driven west on Hwy 8 from The Sunset Highway to the Buckman Springs turn off. Okay how many times have you noticed that there is a lonely grave just on the other side of the right of way fence. Well it's there, it is the grave of Amos Buckman founder of the area and proprietor of Buckman Springs.
He's hidden well, but if you know where the ruins are at, that is the Buckman Springs Ruins, its relatively easy. Just bring a pair of binoculars and scan the highlway fence, you should notice a sharp turn in the fence. This was done to bypass the grave. now getting there through the brush is another matter, though there is an old dirt road that will get you close. This may start on private property though.
During the construction of Highway 8, Amos who had died in Buckman springs on march 28 1898, was accidentelly dug up. He was reburied on the spot and the right of way fence was detoured around the grave. The state supplied the stone marker in the pictures. Nearby lies the ghost town of Buckman Springs. |
