Located east of Niland California in The Colorado Desert, in The Salton Sink. Salvation Mountain is one Leonard Knights monument to God.At 50 feet tall by almost 200 feet wide it is a truly unique piece of Outsider Art. Built out of adobe, sand and any pieces of discarded junk he slowly built the mountain.
The whole thing being covered with donated paint. In 2002 Leonard received a Plaque proclaiming Salvation Mountain a national treasure. Sadly Leonard Knight passed away recently February 10 2014 at the age of 82. I have read a group of volunteers still maintain the site. Something to check on a future trip. A prayer and Truck, seems everything gets painted and covered in scripture at Salvation Mountain.
