Graves Under San Diego Ave.
El Campo Santo Cemetery, Located with Old Town San Diego is a small cemetery est. 1849. After the cemetery had fallen out of use, The City of San Diego decided to widen San Diego Avenue to accommodate a trolley line. When the street was widen it took over a portion of the cemetery. Later when the cemetery was renovated, Ground penetrating gear revealed the location of graves, and some were outside of the walls. The photo above was made some years back during The Halloween/ Days of The Dead. Within the Hand there is a small metal plug set within the sidewalk,Examine it closer and it say Grave Site. These plugs can be found all over the sidewalk and into San Diego Avenue.
There are also burials under Linwood Street at the rear of the cemetery as well, but no plugs for these.
